Sotheby's to launch sales in Germany
Later this year, Sotheby’s will launch auctions in Cologne, Germany, establishing itself as the only international auction house to hold sales in the country. Why Cologne? Because it is “the beating heart of the art world in this region, and a city surrounded by one of the highest concentrations of collectors and contemporary art institutions in Europe” Franka Haiderer, Chairwoman, Head of Germany, Head of Business Development EMEA and Asia says. Also, its closeness to Austria, the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg is an advantage. The auction will be settled in a former palace with a series of palatial rooms opening onto an open terrace with sweeping vistas over the river Rhine.

Three auctions are already confirmed for this year:
10-17 September, Modern & Contemporary Art Online will celebrate drawings and sculptures by the most famous artists across the Impressionist, Modern, Post-War and Contemporary periods.
In November, “NOW” sale will consist of mixing young and cutting-edge artists with renowned local and international artists working across the mediums of painting, drawing, sculpture, photography etc.
Another sale dedicated to luxury items such as jewellery, watches, handbags and sneakers will also occur in the autumn.

Launching sales in Germany will enable to “welcome and entertain local collectors” but also “better serve clients from right across Northern Europe than ever before” Sebastian Fahey, Managing Director, Sotheby’s EMEA explains.
