Claudia Cardinale: Dressing a Star

Sotheby’s was truly honoured to organise the sale of Claudia Cardinale’s
personal wardrobe.

The internationally renowned French-speaking Italian/Tunisian actress is best
known thanks to her appearances in such films as Big Deal on Madonna Street
(1958), The Leopard (1963) and Once Upon a Time in the West (1968).
This online sale paid tribute not only to the actress but also to Italian fashion
from the late 1950’s to the early 1980’s. A glamour icon in the 1960’s with a
breathtaking track record, Claudia Cardinale was also renowned for her fashion
taste. Some 130 exceptional pieces especially designed for the actress were put
under the hammer. These included prestigious pieces designed by the greatest
Italian designers of the time such as Emilio Schuberth, Roberto Capucci, Irene
Galitzine, Barocco, Balestra, but also by Parisian Nina Ricci who frequently
dressed the actress during the 1960’s.

During the sale we were also able to admire garments worn by the actress
during international film events such as the Cannes Film Festival, the Academy
Awards in Los Angeles, the Venice Film Festival, etc. as well as outfits worn in a
variety of roles such as in Blake Edwards; The Pink Panther (1963) or Antonio
Pietrangeli, The Magnificent Cuckold (1964).
